The idea

What is interdependence?

Interdependence means relying on one another. At In+ter, we ask how to make those relationships work better while protecting each person's right to choose.

01 · Meaning

Relying on others is not losing your say.

Here, interdependence means that people rely on one another to meet some of their needs.

Independence

Doing things for yourself.

Dependence

Relying on someone to meet a need.

Interdependence

Relying on one another. Those connections can exist whether or not we have deliberately organised them.

Working distinctions

A person can be independent in one part of life and need real support in another. What comes back need not be equal, prompt, or money. We want these relationships deliberate: people know who does the work and have a say in the terms.

02 · Difference

Different views do not have to make enemies.

We are already interdependent, even when we disagree. None of us has a perfect view, and nobody should have to surrender their convictions to work with others.

That does not make every claim equally true or every action acceptable. Accountability still matters. It means staying human to one another long enough to find one shared need and decide what we can build around it.

03 · Examples

What it looks like.

Four examples.

More on each

A tool library depends on people returning tools and showing others how borrowing works. Highfield Farm joins soil, food and community work; nobody has to copy it. A cooperative still leaves each member their say. A small agreement is useful without becoming an unlimited obligation.

These are examples, not summit partners or endorsements.

04 · Choice and limits

Choice belongs in the arrangement.

Depending is not owning. Five tests.

01Do people understand what they agree to?
02Can they say no, or leave?
03Who decides on shared things?
04Who does the unseen work?
05What if someone needs more than they give?
Is shared effort fair?

Not automatically. The test is whether an arrangement expands people's choices or quietly takes them away. Clear agreements and respect for limits are part of the work, and community support does not replace public services or specialist help.

05 · Where to start

Start with one real need.

One thing, a few people.

Name the need

A tool, a repair, someone to learn from.

Look for what exists

A group may already do it.

A small, clear agreement

Who does what, and when to check.

Or just know who lives next door.

06 · The summit

What could we do together?

In+ter is a five-day online summit, 6–10 October 2026, exploring the five pillars that bring us together: Sovereignty, Belonging, Vitality, Regeneration and Prosperity. It starts from questions, not answers.
